The research focus of the IMWF deals with materials testing and simulation as well as with component calculation and –analysis.
Many research projects are carried out in cooperation with the Materials Testing Institute (MPA) of the University of Stuttgart.
The department of Multi-Scale Simulation carries out simulations in various length- and timescales. The main focus lies on the finite elements method and the molecular dynamics simulation. Also, ab initio methods, Monte Carlo methods and simulations based on dislocation dynamics are used in many research projects. Basic research projects as well as industrial projects are worked on. Subjects of experiments are metals as well as ceramics, plastics and interfaces of various materials. The determination of mechanical characteristics and the analysis of material behaviour under pressure are the main foci of the research.
